While the term bicycle was coined in France, during the 1860s, the first method of transportation resembling the bicycle, the draisine, dates back to 1817, and was made in Germany. Also called a dandy horse, it was invented by Baron Karl Drais. The first bamboo bicycle, however, was showcased in 1894 at the London Stanley Show and was very popular. Many people prefer bicycles made of bamboo due to the vibration dampening, crash tolerance, and general aesthetic. They are considered by many to be more environmentally friendly than standard bicycles, made of steel or aluminum. Some popular manufacturers of bamboo bicycles are FlavioDeslandes, Calfee Design, and Biomega.
